Fan Favorite Rachel Alexandra Wins Preakness

Fan and oddsmakers favorite Rachel Alexandra won The Preakness and looked very good doing it. She was ahead for the majority of the race, until toward the end Mine That Bird finally made its way through the pack and made it somewhat of a competition. Mine That Bird's slow start made it difficult for the horse to wade its way through the pack of horses ahead of it. Initially it looked as if Rachel Alexandra would win going away, but Mine That Bird came through the pack and kept it interesting at the end.

Rachel Alexandra took the early lead and never looked back, becoming the first filly to win the race since 1924. It was an amazing feat considering only 4 fillies had won The Preakness before her. She ran the 1 3/16 mile race in 1:55. Jockey Calvin Borel decided not to ride 2009 Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird for the Preakness Stakes going with Rachel Alexandra. I'm sure he's glad he made that choice because the purse was mighty handsome. The payout odds were 2 to 1 giving bettors $200 for every $100 wagered.
